The 2009 Colorado State Singles Handball Tournament was held at the Denver Athletic Club on April 16 – 19. Ninety-three players competed in 12 divisions. The tremendous participation was highlighted with 20 entries in the “C” Division, a very competitive juniors’ group, and over 10 players in the 65+ and Diamond Masters’ Divisions. There were also out-of-state competitors from California, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. The spring snowstorm caused a few forfeits and schedule changes, but the majority of the matches were played as planned.

There was excellent competition in all the classes with many matches being decided by tie breakers. The Open final included perennial state champion, Bear Meiring, and newcomer Tyler Stevens. Tyler moved to Colorado from Ohio at the beginning of April. Tyler advanced to the final by beating previous state champ, Mark Hammond, 21-14, (21-20), 11-5. Bear defeated Cody Parker, 21-3 and 21-10, to set up the final match. The first game was very close with great rallies, incredible “gets” and precision “shooting.” Tyler prevailed 21-18 in game one. The second game provided similar “crowd pleasing” action and Tyler captured the state title with a 21-15 victory. Congratulations to Tyler and Bear for their outstanding efforts and sportsmanship.

The tournament was a great success thanks to the participants, contributors, and the tournament directors. The following people and businesses contributed time, money, or in-kind items (i.e., food, beverages, etc.): Corey Ahrens, Ron Bronner, Bob Brown, Don Stewart, Gene Schneider, Bear Meiring, Jay Temple, Rick Woodward, Jim Hale, Cindy Miller, Brad Mrolsa, Greg Oyler, Dan Price, Stan Wolpoff, Jack Feingold, Bob Hickman, Kevin Dowling, Robin Carlsen, InCheck, Stan Dunlavy, and several anonymous donors.

John Bannister of the Denver Athletic Club provided excellent support during the tournament play. The CHA would like to thank the DAC management and staff for their continued support of Colorado handball.
